Maryland CURE is a state chapter of International CURE, an organization dedicated to reducing crime through reform of the criminal justice system since 1972. We believe prisons should only be used for those who absolutely must be incarcerated. Prisons should not be used as warehouses for humanity.

Maryland has 30 jails in 23 counties.

The Prison System- As of December 31, 2020, the number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of the State of Maryland correctional authorities was 15,623 located in 24 state prisons and held in custody of private prisons or local jails. State operated facilities had a budget of $842,375,308. The annual budget for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is over a billion dollars.

The Community Corrections System- As of December 31, 2020, Maryland community corrections population was 56,551 under probation and 9,490 under parole.

It is estimated that there are almost 24,000 people confined in Maryland prisons with another 14,000 in jails along with close to 100,000 probationers and 14,000 parolees. The annual budget for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is over a billion dollars.

Citizens United for Rehabilitation of Errants (CURE) is a grassroots organization that was founded in Texas in 1972. It became a national organization in 1985.

RESOURCES & REHABILITATION

We believe that prisons should be used only for those who absolutely must be incarcerated and that those who are incarcerated should have all of the resources they need to turn their lives around.

STATE, NATIONAL & GLOBAL IMPACT

Prisoners cannot vote, but their family members and friends can. One of the goals of all CURE chapters is to make sure that everyone knows who their legislators are and to assist them in registering to vote. No vote means no voice. We meet quarterly and currently have three working groups
